Elliot Quest: 8 Bit Retro Adventure Game Review

Over Thanksgiving weekend I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a great pixel art adventure/RPG by Ansimuz Games called Elliot Quest. Elliot Quest is an open world platformer is a true throwback to games like Zelda 2 “The Adventure of Link”, Kid Icarus, Faxanadu and Act Raiser.

Our story begins with Elliot, a young man investigating the mysterious disappearance of his wife. After trying to take his own life, Elliot discovers that he has been put under the demon “Satars” curse which prevents him from dying and begins to consume Elliot’s vitality. These unfortunate events kick-start your journey to destroy the Satar, find a cure, and reunite with your wife.

Game Features:

Elliot Quest has many well done nostalgic features that keep things entertaining and challenging at the same time. One of the biggest being the games controls, which are simple to grasp yet difficult to master. Throughout play, you’ll be dodging various floor traps, projectiles, and enemies from all angles. Control mastery is a must! Combat is pretty casual as you can overcome many enemies with enough patience and a few well placed arrow shots. You will encounter 16 boss battles along the way, each with their own unique animations and challenging behaviors.

As you progress you will level up and add skill points into 5 different attributes that affect how your hero will perform. Character customization gets really exciting once you get magical attacks and new weapons. These help keep the combat interesting, granting you different approaches when battling enemies. What would an adventure game be without loot right? Along the way you will find tons of gems and money, which you can use to buy items from shop owners located across the map. You can also “chain” attacks, which cause enemies drop more items.

Elliot Quest features a catchy score written by Michael Chait. The music fits right in with other adventure games of the NES era, setting a familiar adventurous tone that will have you humming for hours after you’ve put the controller down.

Exploration:

Elliot Quest is very much open world. Between the 5 dungeons for you to explore, you will be able to freely travel a world map which give you the freedom to go wherever you want. I think this is an important design choice which helps retain the retro game aesthetic. I feel that modern games often do too much hand holding, making many “open world” games, end up feeling very linear. Elliot Quest encourages you to explore and re-explore areas as you progress through the game for additional items and loot.

Overall:

Elliot Quest is a nu-classic in the adventure/rpg genre that tips it’s hat to the retro classics while still having its own identity. Fans of platformers and puzzles will really enjoy Elliot Quests challenge and pace, while fans of rpgs will love leveling up, exploration, and finding items.

Elliot Quest is currently available on STEAM for $9.99.

Cyberpunk Game Jam Screenshot Showcase

We have a special edition of this month’s Screenshot showcase for you. This November we are honoring Cyberpunk indie games with a ton of great screens from indie developers around the world. The cyberpunk genre has always held a special place in my heart and is by far my favorite genre of fiction. The games featured here were part of GameJolt/Itcho’s #Cyberjam a few months back, which was definitely one of the biggest and most well done game jams to date. So many different indie developers came together to craft some great games with enough neon colors to induce multiple seizures. If you’re as much of a fan of cyberpunk as I am, then you will fall in love quickly with all of these games.

Hotline Miami 2 Wrong Number Footage Leaked

Hotline-miami-3

Being a huge fan of the original Hotline Miami, I have been clawing my eyes out in anticipation for the release of Hotline Miami 2 Wrong Number. Back in August, Youtube user “Lennyreviews” posted supposed leaked footage of Hotline Miami 2 Wrong Number and honestly…it looks legit. Though obviously still a work in progress, the game seems to capture the same aesthetic and blood lusting brutality that we all loved with the first Hotline Miami.  There is a spoiler alert warning that comes along with watching this video as it is an hour and 30 minutes of solid gameplay footage, so watch at your own risk! I have also included a video of the supposed sound track of the Hotline Miami 2 for all you audiophiles out there.

For more pixelated blood and a deeper look at the game as a whole, check out our Hotline Miami review.

Bedlam Kickstarter is the chaotic RPG we’ve been waiting for

Bedlam-logo

Get ready to roam the dangerous and harsh wastelands of Bedlam! This new Kickstarter project is being developed by Austin indie dev team Skyshine Games, whose members have worked on many influential gaming and comic projects in the past (Unreal Tournament /Heavy Metal). Using “The Banner Saga” engine, Skyshine Games is working to create a chaotic, post-apocalyptic RPG in the vein of FTL or XCOM. All of the characters and landscapes have their own beautifully crafted and unique styles, which is something that sets Bedlam apart from a lot of other video games in the same genre. In Bedlam, you will take command of a crew of engineers and soldiers in search of a mysterious utopia called “Aztec City”.

Bedlams style is creatively influenced by gritty 80’s / 90’s movies and comic books (The Road Warrior and Frank Millers “Hard Boiled” come to mind). Bedlams game play fuses isometric camera angles and strategic turn based combat. The game also features the “blitz battle system”. This turn based system features swift play, no turn-order, strategic movement and attacks, crew-buffing Dozer upgrades, and Dozer weapons for maximum destruction! At first glance, the game looks like a motion graphic novel with an added layer of tense, strategic action that will keep things interesting between dialogue.

As you travel the wastelands, you will encounter many challenges in the form of radioactive territories, nano plagues, marauders, and mutant infestations.  Players will discover ancient technologies, elite crew members and secret artifacts. Collecting resources after completing quests or defeating enemies is an important part of your journey through Bedlam, and you will have to make sure your party is well equipped and fed to survive.

Overall, Bedlam looks bad ass as hell! Its style is refreshing and sets itself apart from other games in it’s genre. Being a huge fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, comic books, and RPG’s, this game combines everything I have been waiting for and I am really looking forward to the backer updates for this project!
