Shovel Knight Indie Game Review

The team over at Yacht Club games must be dancing in there office chairs over the success of Shovel Knight, since its release on steam on June 26th 2014 (and they should be!). This nostalgic action adventure game has the look and feel of the Mega Man series and introduces a hero with an unusual, yet versatile weapon….the shovel?  This weapon not only allows you to attack enemies in various ways, but can also be used to dig, and help you perform a double jump like maneuver by bouncing off objects and enemies. Throughout the game you can collect a ton of different weapons, armor, relics, and magical abilities to help you shovel your way though hordes of baddies. The levels are beautifully detailed with a handcrafted modern 8 bit style, vibrant backgrounds, and animations. Stage selection is an homage to Super Mario Bros 3, where you can move along a gigantic world map and select the area you’d like to tackle next.

The greatest part about this game aside from its extremely high fun factor, is the fact that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The narrative is lighthearted and full of hilarious dialogue that will keep you chuckling in between levels and big battles. The challenge level won’t have you rage quitting, but instead keep you incredibly addicted through the course of your game play experience. For those that beat the game you will be rewarded with a New game + feature, where you can keep all your loot from your previous play through. Overall, Shovel Knight answers all your prayers for what the retro gaming resurgence can be. I really hope we see more games that mesh fun factor and challenge as well as Shovel Knight does in the future!

Ghostsong Progress Update

Since I backed Ghostsong a year ago, I have thoroughly enjoyed following Matt Whites progress and development of the game. You can tell with each update that this indie adventure is being worked into something truly magical. The fusion of influences are superb, from the subterranean exploration of Super Metroid to the maddening, yet addictive challenge level of Dark Souls. Ghostsong looks like it is shaping up to be an epic adventure experience and I really can’t wait to see where it goes and when it will drop. I wanted to show some extra love for the project by adding a few images and videos from the Kickstarter campaign that some may not have had a chance to see. Check out this Ghostsong progress update through images and video!

Shadowrun Dragonfall Directors Cut Announced

Shadowrun Returns has made waves since its release on crowd funding platform Kickstarter. Fans of the franchise were pleased to find that many of their long awaited hopes for the game were well met. The community that helped fund the game was pivotal in the creation of SRR and with their feedback Harebrained Schemes was able to address the necessary tweaks (save anywhere) and bring it to the next level. This feedback helped them build the Shadowrun Dragonfall campaign, which was well received and positively mentioned across the web. Dragonfall was exceptional in so many different ways.  Expanded story line, deep and unique character development, tense battles, and a world that fans of Shadowrun could not get enough of.

The team over at Harebrained Schemes recently announced the release of Shadowrun Dragonfall Directors Cut. This release will be a standalone game (instead of an expansion) with new features, missions, artwork, and much more. The game will be released sometime in September on Steam, GOG, and the Humble Store and will be free to all Kickstarter backers of Shadowrun Returns.
