Paba Games Studio Interview with John White

Today I was fortunate enough to have a chat with Developer John White of Paba games. He is the lead developer of Mogwash, a new retro golden age platformer that pays homage to classics like Commander Keen, and the original Duke Nukem….with a colorful twist. John is also the co-creater of Jasper’s Journey, a whimsical platformer that has players on a quest to save Jasper’s cat Orlando from an evil witch that intends to use him as an ingredient in her evil potion. Learn more about what inspired his game development career in my interview with John White of Paba Games.

RETRONUKE: So John, how did Paba games come together?

John White: When I was young I used to doodle around on BBC Micro computers with my brother. We made Jasper’s Journeys for DOS released under Pabagames. I used to mostly be interested in Graphics and Design. Now I’ve been coding and sound making also.

RETRONUKE:
How many games has your team worked on so far?

John White: I’ve worked on Jasper, original & rehash for many years, and have been working on several games including Mogwash for the last 7 years.

RETRONUKE:
What’s the name of your current indie game project?

John White: Mogwash.

RETRONUKE: What inspired the art direction for your current project?

John White: Amiga500 games, Whizzer and Chips Comics, Wonder Boy and Rainbow Islands.

RETRONUKE: Music is such an important part of the gaming experience. What music inspired your game?

John White: 80s arcade games had music to make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, but for Mogwash I’ve gone for the funky techno side of things like Moon Patrol and Bobble Bobble.

RETRONUKE: Which game development tools are you using?

John White: Game Maker, Sfxr, Milky Tracker.

RETRONUKE: Which retro games inspired you to become indie game developers?

John White: Moon Patrol, Elevator Action, Ghosts’n’Goblin were the main life changers.

RETRONUKE: What is the most rewarding aspect of being an indie dev?

John White: Living in the countryside. I can blow my eyes out staring at pixels for hours then reverse any damage by talking the dog for a walk.

RETRONUKE: What indie games are you playing now?

John White:

RETRONUKE:
Which indie games are you excited for this year?

John White:

10 Mobile Retro Games to Play on Your Smart Phone

I have been playing video games since I was 6 years old. I have tried a variety of games over the years, but I always come back and play some of the classic retro games I used to play as a kid. The great thing is that many of those classic games i used to play when i was younger, are available for smartphones. If you love retro games as much as i do, take a look at my list of 10 mobile retro games that you can pick up for your iPhone or Android device!

Retro Pinball(iOS)

retro pinball ios

One of the classic games that I played back in the 90s. It is now available on your iPhone. You are able to choose from 3 free tables. If you want more tables, you will have to pay for it. The controls are really simple, with only 2 flippers to control. You can play this on the bus or waiting for someone. I play this from time to time to bring me back to the 90s.

Double Dragon Trilogy(Android, iOS)

double dragon trilogy ios

This is probably the origin of the arcade beat them up type of game. I have played the sequels and newer versions. Available on IOS and Android the game gives you a good idea of how much this genre has evolved since then. Controls are simple and easy to master once you get the hang of it. My childhood best friend and I spent countless hours beating this game as a kid. We weren’t very good back then, but we managed to beat it eventually.

1-Bit Ninja(iOS)

1 bit ninja

If you enjoyed playing your old school Gameboy, this will give you a reminder of it. This game is hard too! You are to get to the end of each level by jumping on enemy heads(Super Mario anyone?) and collect coins along the way.

Sonic CD(iOS, Android, PC)

sonic cd ios android

If you are a Sonic fan, then this is something you want to play. It is quite similar to Sonic 2 and incorporates the spin dash, which was not in the original Sonic 1. Palmtree Panic’s music is also very soothing and I think it can rival Sonic 2’s Emerald Hill Zone ost. The game also incorporates a mechanic where you enter the past(harder enemies) and future(easier).

Streets of Rage(iOS)

streets of rage ios

Much like the Double Dragon Trilogy, this is also another beat’em up game I spent countless hours on.  Punching, kicking and slamming people around never gets old. I also like to use weapons whenever I can get my hands on one, but I often lose them quickly. The bosses are quite tough too. That is what makes the game challenging and fun.

Pacific Wings(iOS)

pacific wings ios

These plane games got me hooked in the arcade for hours. I think I spent a lot of $1 coins to try and beat games like this in the arcade. I eventually got really good at it. You control a plane where you can get power ups and fight enemy planes. Bombs are the saving grace if you ever find yourself getting cornered by enemy fire. Think of it as Contra but with planes.

Tanks! Free(iOS)

tanks ios

This game really reminded me of an old classic tank game on the NES, but I was never able to find the name of that game. The game play and art style is very similar to the 80s “Battlezone” from Atari. You control your tank via joysticks and you collect power ups along the way. Unlike most games that give you X life points, it has a health bar instead.

Snake(iOS)

snake ios

Snake is the classic Nokia game we used to play as a kid. It is hard and challenging, much like our modern Flappy bird. As you keep collecting dots, your snake gets longer. Eventually, it can almost fill up the screen. I always play this in class when I have a boring teacher. I can remember the number of times I got caught by our teacher while playing this, resulting in our Nokia phones getting confiscated. J

Megaman X(iOS, Android)

megaman x ios android

This is the original that made the X series so popular. You can’t dash in this one initially, but as you get the leg power up, you can do that. The controls on the mobile is not as smooth as playing it on your SNES, but it isn’t too bad. I do think a lot of the later versions lack creativity as they seem to draw their inspirations from the original version.

8 Bit Rally(iOS, Android)

8 bit rally ios android

I wasn’t a big fan of racing games back then until I played Top Gear. 8 Bit Rally really reminds me of it and is a fun game to play on your phone. You have to tilt your phone for steering your car in the right direction, which is a bit more refreshing than the usual touch pad controls. Upgrading the car is my favorite part of the game. Speed upgrades all the way!

Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed this list of games I just shared with you all. Give some of them a try! If you were to ask me which one was my all-time favorite, my vote will go to Megaman X. At least for me, it is one of the best action games I have played.

The Surprising History Of Retro Top Gun Games

The iconic 1986 film Top Gun has been back in the news lately, largely because there’s quite a bit of chatter about a possible sequel. Today recently posted a photo of Tom Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer after the two reportedly met to discuss Top Gun 2, and it now seems like a matter of when, and not if, such a movie will exist.

Given all of that, now seems like as good a time as ever for a look back at the history of Top Gun, not on screen but in gaming. Because there hasn’t really been a seminal Top Gun video game, many fans of the film might simply assume that it never really resulted in any gaming titles at all. But that’s actually pretty far from the truth. The reality is that Top Gun has inspired a pretty consistent run of games related either directly to the film content or aerial combat in general.

Perhaps even more surprising is the fact that a few of these games have actually been somewhat recent! Most notably, a game called Top Gun: Hard Lock was released in 2012 for Xbox 360, PS3, and Windows. It was a fighter pilot action game in which you could control a young pilot named Lance Webb after he graduates from the Top Gun academy (under the tutelage of Tom Cruise’s Maverick character). However, even more recently than Hard Lock, Betfair’s online casino added a Top Gun-themed slot to its collection of games. The game just launched a few months ago, and it allows players to enjoy a digital slot machine experience enhanced by images and even footage from the original film.

There’s a trio of other Top Gun games that could appropriately be called modern. The most available of the bunch is an iOS app by Paramount Pictures that you can still download. The game is meant for play on an iPad and essentially brings aerial dogfighting to life on a touchscreen in a way that’s satisfying from an action standpoint but a little bit lacking in substance. Additionally, there was a game called Top Gun released for Nintendo DS in 2006, as well as one called Combat Zones put out for the original Playstation back in 2001.

But the real charm in Top Gun-based gaming comes in the form of a few legitimately retro titles that helped to keep the concept alive from 1986 through the present. A 1998 PC game by Atari called Hornet’s Nest was a flop, but before that a couple of games were pretty worthwhile for fans of the film, or of fighter pilot action in general. Spectrum Holobyte’s Fire At Will game in 1996 (released for Windows) was a pretty action-packed option that let players control Maverick through a variety of missions around the world. And the 1993 Game Boy title Guts & Glory invoked a similar brand of action. However, it’s worth noting that Game Boy was perhaps more forgiving of the approach as a pure combat game rather than advanced flight simulator.

But it’s the really old Top Gun-related titles that can get a fan of retro gaming excited. These are The Second Mission, an NES title from 1990 (released overseas in 1989), and the official Top Gun game developed by Ocean Software in 1986 and rehashed by Konami in 1987, also for NES. You can get a feel for these games through a gameplay video on YouTube, and you’ll understand in an instant why it’s appealing for retro gaming fans. Crude, pixel-heavy graphics and amusingly simple sounds represent the best of the era, and the Top Gun game is a pure shoot-em-up piloting game at its heart. It’s actually oddly reminiscent of the film despite not having much in the way of story or graphics. It also may be the most enjoyable Top Gun game out there for those who appreciate something pure and simple.

It’s likely that Top Gun 2 results in some fresh gaming releases. But there have actually already been more titles related to the film than most realize, and a few of them have been a whole lot of fun.

The Captain Game Trailer By Sysiac Games

Explore The Void of Space in The Captain

Sysiac Games latest project called “The Captain”, is the lovechild of graphical adventure games like Monkey Island and Full Throttle, and also uses RPG and Strategy elements to craft a unique open world game play experience.  Released on September 22nd, the game trailer for The Captain, puts players in the shoes of a spaceship captain named Captain Welmu who sets out on a peaceful mission to Mars. Like many great works of science fiction have shown us in these situations, things tend to go very wrong. Captain Welmu suddenly disappears into the void of space, only to turn up again 100 light years away. Now, his only mission is to explore the vastness of space, and find a way home. Based on my first impression of the trailer, one thing is certain, players will be spending a lot of time alone. The trailers sense of solitude is chilling and has gotten my full attention. The Captain is something that I will definitely follow until the games full release. For those of you who would like to check out the demo, a free demo for The Captain is available on the Sysiac website.
